Plainfield Renewable Energy is a 37.5 megawatt wood-fueled power plant planned for Plainfield, Connecticut. It will use wood from a variety of sources such as tree thinnings, pallets and recycled waste wood. The power production technology is a fluidized bed staged gasification system that generates steam to drive a conventional steam turbine generator. This advanced technology will make it one of the cleanest biomass power facilities in the U.S.

The facility will be located on 27 acres of industrial-zoned land in Plainfield. Previously a Superfund location, this site has been fully remediated and will now significantly contribute to Plainfield’s tax base.

The project is designed to supply the Connecticut Class I renewable energy market. In 2003 the Connecticut Legislature recognized the need for the state to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuel power plants and passed a landmark renewable energy bill. This bill promotes the development of clean, renewable power generation, and requires that the two Connecticut utilities purchase a minimum of 150 megawatts of renewable power from in-state facilities.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, which promotes the development of clean energy throughout the state, has made a significant loan to Plainfield Renewable Energy to support the project’s development.

The Plainfield project will create a positive economic impact in Plainfield and Eastern Connecticut by generating several hundred construction jobs over an estimated 24-month period. Once in operation, the project will provide 20-25 steady, well-paid permanent positions at the facility. Up to 100 more jobs will be created in supporting businesses throughout the region. The Town of Plainfield will receive large and steady annual tax payments over many years of the project’s operating life.

Plainfield Renewable Energy is owned by Decker Energy and NuPower, LLC, a Connecticut-based developer with extensive experience in the Connecticut renewable energy market.

The project is currently in advanced development.  The project has received approval from the Connecticut Siting Council. Draft permits have been issued by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.  Studies have shown the electrical interconnection is feasible, and the interconnection agreement has been completed.  Negotiations are under way for the engineering, procurement and construction contract.  We have a preliminary commitment from a major financial institution for construction and permanent financing.

Construction is expected to commence in late-2008 and commercial operation in 2010.
